a GUI, I then press "CTL+Alt+F4", to get a console login, and then do

I am not sure whether I have exactly the same problem. If I run winecfg
and click the test sound button, I do get a sound but it is a crackling
sound. If I push it a couple of times, the window becomes unresponsive
and I have to ¨force quit¨ it.
I am on Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit.

I am having the same problem with a Vodafone Huawei K3565 USB modem in
the UK. I can ping www.google.com but I can not connect via Firefox. It

I also got the black screen when trying to boot from the 8.10 live cd.
My screen actually displayed a message that it is turning off right
after splash screen as if the computer was switched off, but doing

I can confirm this bug in Ubuntu 8.10.
The driver appears as "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" in the
Hardware Drivers section, but can not be enabled.
This is what I get when I probe for my card on the cli:
