all worked fine. I suppose a choppy internet connection disrupts the
installer.

Rebooting the PC was not sufficient (for whatever reason), it seems, to
apply the above changes. Powering the computer down and then back up
has resulted in the bug mentioned above being no longer apparent.

The version of sqlite3 that I'm using is sqlite3 3.6.10-1 (jaunty) from
the 'main' repository.
Its dependencies are:
libc6 (>=2.4)
libreadline5 (>=5.2)

It suggests:

Just had this bug running Evolution 2.24.0 in Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid)
Beta, Linux Kernel 2.6.27-7-generic, and GNOME 2.24.0.
