A possible workaround for those who:
- Use a laptop (I guess)
- Rarely do a full boot
- Are still willing to wait for a while for the bug to be fixed
I have my laptop set to suspend on lid close, so after the machine has
stopped booting (no more disk activity), I suspend and resume. This

Can confirm the bug with latest updates on 10.04, HP tx2020eo laptop.
Problem did not exist on this machine in 8.04, appeared in 8.10, still
existed in 9.04, disappeared in 9.10, and now it is back again. And this
time it seems to affect wicd too, which earlier could be used as a
workaround.

Yep, unrelated, and now fixed. Caused by legacy custom startup script
that did not have the necessary module in kernel anymore, or something.

My CPU problem seems to be unrelated then.

I just did a clean network install (keeping old /home) of 9.10.

I have this problem with HP Pavilion tx2020eo (AMD 64).
First installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and restarted - no

restarted - no change.

I tried this with a Live Karmic CD. Seems like the problem exists, since
the projector loses sync. Unfortunately, I do not have another screen,
and I cannot get in via the network to diagnose. Being a live CD, I do
not know how to change it so that I could get in and get the files you
requested.

Workaround tested on HP tx2020eo:
Step 1: Unchecking and checking the "Enable wireless" setting in the NM
taskbar icon (right click) immediately starts the scan and connection.
Step 2: Requesting the same via the command line through the following
works as well:
dbus-send --system --type=method_
FINALLY, after a year of suffering with vesa and no video playback,

To Gerard:
Ok, so vesa is not working for you. You have a DVI connection on the AE500,
right? I have an AE700 with VGA and HDMI connections, so have to use an adapter

You can modify the Device section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to include:
