I was having a similar issue connecting my RPI3 to an older Dell monitor
through a HDMI to VGA adapter and this did the trick for me.

I am running 13.10 as a virtual host on a HP Proliant Mini Server. When
I upgrade to linux-image-3.11.0.19-generic, the USB mouse and keyboard
and the network drivers no longer function. I can enter the Grub boot
screen and if I boot using kernel ...18 everything works.

Seems like Firefox is using a similar technique with its autofill menus as
Florence when it comes to focusing.
Click into the searchbox in firefox, start typing.

Florence loses foc
Specifically, the Weather applet gives error: "Network error in Weather.
Could not retrieve weather data. You may be experiencing connectivity
issues." It gives this error when I search for a location and when it
polls for new weather data.
I have env variables set for my proxy server, as well as
I'm also behind a proxy, and I'm finding AWN applets (python driven)
also fail because of this bug. This is reported as Bug #185206, and I
think updating Oneiric's python to include this fix would squash many
bugs with one shoe, so to speak.

Removing the files in /var/crash (which included apport reports) seems
to have fixed the issue for me, as well.

I do use autologin and its seems to be the root cause just like 546992.
Loggin out & in again makes it workfine, turning autologin off makes it work
right on the first login.

I'm having identical desktop crashes on multiple computers in my
classroom (I'm a teacher in elementary school) Xterm works fine but

Unplugging and plugging the mouse into the usb port again gets it working
