Okay this is interesting. If I start Gimp 2.8 and then open or import an
image to work on, it'll let me save to xcf or export no problem.
But if Gimp is invoked by right clicking on the image, that's when I can
immediately save.
So at least I have a workaround

In Ubuntu 12.04, I don't quite get the crash, but the text-editor is
buggy. You choose a font, it keeps sans and you have to assign the font
again. After copying a text layer (pretty fundamental to any text effect
operation), it moves the topmost layer on editing.
Really frustrating.

In the end I upgraded the CPU (HSF) cooling to an Arctic Freezer Pro 7.
Now runs 20°C cooler on memory/cpu intensive programs.
So the factory fit fan and heatsink was sufficient for 'Blows but not,
apparently, for the Hardy plus incarnations of Ubuntu.

I'm assuming a kernel issue, but for my hardware, this is following on
unresolved since Hardy.
Basically, certain heavy websites (particular Flash/graphics/function
heavy online newspapers or similar sites), cause a sudden bottleneck and
eventually an auto shutdown.

I've not been so lucky. At least three times since upgrading to Intrepid
I've had automatic shutdowns due to kernel overheating problems,
although it has settled down of late. The jury's still out for me

Well said Janne. This has been a terrible kernel for overheating issues
which left me simply giving up and waiting for another dist-upgrade. The
most disappointing thing has been the general lack of mediation.

I have to agree with Janne, this is the worst upgrade yet and I somehow

My Mainboard is a generic P4M 915G/PDI and since reporting this I have
noticed that on booting up from the auto shutdown and into gnome, I have
to do a GDM restart in order to get the symbolic links and icons back to
their original state. Otherwise I have a blank desktop
