Now 2 days old - the latest glusterfs version 3.1 is out, it addresses
many more old issues and has better performance than previous versions
and a nice CLI to boot.
They provide Ubuntu amd64.debs for 64 bit platforms:

confirm it is related to sqlite locks over NFS.
I have not tested with NFSv4 and still use NFSv

Not quite sure why Nvidia propietary drivers are to blame for something
that only effects Firefox (I use Nvidia 177.82 drivers in Intrepid)...
but after some messing around, I disabled the Ubuntu Firefox
Modifications Extension plugin (version 0.6) and so far I have no
freezes.

After a few days of trying to get this working with a hardy upgrade and
making a total mess of things, I thought I would share how I fixed it -
