Not quite sure why Nvidia propietary drivers are to blame for something that only effects Firefox (I use Nvidia 177.82 drivers in Intrepid)... but after some messing around, I disabled the Ubuntu Firefox Modifications Extension plugin (version 0.6) and so far I have no freezes.
