I don't think this bug should be closed quite yet. Using "vlc %F" or
"vlc %m" or just "vlc" as the launch command works for local files, but

In System->Pref...->Sounds->Sounds tab
Uncheck the system sounds thro esd.

hi, i am currently having the same issues on Hardy.. i am also using the same
board as mentioned above.. playback of music can be heard but the problem is
that it has noise in the background.

I just encountered this in Ubuntu/Gutsy after a long set of updates
including a kernel upgrade from 2.6.22-14 to 2.6.22-15. After reading
Bart Samwel's 2007-08-19 comment above, I navigated to
System->Preferences->Sessions and found "Power Manager" was not enabled.
Not sure when this got disabled.
For the characters you found to cause this problem:

file in a normal text editor (e.g. gedit) with the font set to
a) AR PL UMing {CN|HK|TW|TW MBE} (any of those)

page is rendered fine here.
The page mentioned does not require any specific font to render the
page. So, it would use whatever is set in Firefox or fontconfig for
sans-serif.

Any chance the fix released upstream will make it into Hardy? From the
description, it looked like it dbus just needs to be compiled with an
extra flag enabled. I know intrepid is coming up soon, but this bug
crashes my machine on a daily basis, and a lot of people like myself
will be hanging on to
The problem also seems to affect hulu.com. (Thought I'd add this
information just in case it provides any useful clues.)
