What brands of generators have you had good experience synching with off-grid inverters (Outback, Magnum, Xantrex)? We sell Kohler, but we'd like to offer an alternative (that we could sell). I've heard good things about Honda, but I've heard that you need to be a Honda dealer to sell them. Any

The issue of what will or will not hurt an inverter, when connected to a generator, does not seem to be resolved. The fail safe method, of course, is to connect to the line side of the transfer switch. Other than that, there are varied views. There are systems in operation that intentionally

SMA has an intelligent dump load that works with their AC coupled systems. It's call a Smart Load, but I don't think they have a UL listed version. SMA has some pretty impressive technology along the lines of AC coupling that they've chosen not to make for the US market. Dana Dana Brandt Ecotech

I know a guy in Colombia who connects his Magnatek Aurora inverter to a genset when the grid is down. Seems to work most of the time. He's got some sort of chinese turbine and chinese controller that dumps power off the back-up generator when necessary. Isn't there some way to detect reverse

While inverters are supposed to work this way, and do so very well on the grid, have any inverters been formally TESTED with various generators to confirm the theory? Anecdotes and theories are not enough. Until there are TESTS and guarantees from inverter manufacturers that expensive generator co

All, If the grid-tie inverter is operating under UL1741 (and therefore IEEE1547), then the inverter has to cease output within 1 second of the voltage going over 10% of the base voltage. So in the case where the generator is outputting and the load is less than the inverter output, the voltage wi

This is déjà vu. I would say that the only safe and "correct" way is to connect the PV inverter output on the line side of the transfer switch. If you are on the generator side of the xfer switch, you are asking for trouble. The only other choice would be to use a contactor to ensure PV disconn

Eric, The inverter output should connect to the grid, either at the meter or main panel, as if the generator isn't there. The critical (backed up) loads should be moved to a separate panel. Install feeders between the two panels, with a transfer (either/or) switch somewhere in the line. The tra
