Patrick, what I was thinking, is why not have a Ti "country bike" racer. Ti or CF, but with fatter tires and and extra chainring. So weight isn't a problem (ok, maybe an extra few hundred grams for the tires, extra ring, rear derailer). This bike would allow the athlete to ride with more comfort

Michael, tandems are wonderful! They equalize riding between unequal riders, so there's no waiting or hard feelings or anyone getting exhausted. If you and your wife ride at the same level (speed & endurance) it's not as big a deal, but if one is significantly stronger, it's the only way to enjoy
