Kevin No, the brake adjustment is the same for both gears. Assume that I'm riding in "High" gear, the 38x16, and I get to a steep hill. I get off and grab my 6mm allen key. I loosen the right axle nut (not the left). I then backpedal and move the chain from the 38 down to the 35 in front.

I figured out one position change that made a big difference. I have Jones Loop H bars, which I like a lot. But I'd been always riding with my hands out at the ends of the bars. Turns out, if I put my thumbs inside the loop and grasp the bars that way, it makes a huge difference in climbing. Huge.
