in or visiting Northern Thailand, Kip and I would like to invite any
of you to our weekly ride. Usually at 3:30 pm, leaving from Lanna

Thanks for sharing and the holiday wishes. Back at you.
Pretty cool to see Rivs distinctive lugged beauty fitting in so well
in such a distant location.
Not going to happen this year, that is for sure. But let me tell you,

Gernot,
Perhaps next summer. My wife will be visiting her family in the south
(Rayong). You didn't mention what city - hopefully, Chaing Mai - my favorite
city. I've often thought how nice it would be to ride in Northern Thailand.

Jeez, that looks fun. But I'll just have to settle for riding into the
Blizzard of the Century today.

I wrap electricians' tape strategically around my steel bottles, tho' this
does have the disadvantage that different cages require different locations.
It's pretty effective, if you don't mind tape beausage ("bow SAHJ").

I have it on good authority (http://sheldonbrown.com/podcasts/
grantpetersen.mp3) that a 700x23c wheel + tire is roughly equivalent
in diameter to a 650Bx38c wheel + tire. So if you can measure your BB
drop with a "normal" wheelset, this should give a pretty good idea of
the predicted BB drop.

Oh God. Trust me, you do NOT want to know. There's a hockey player
from Yale in there somewhere and an old-school 14-32 freewheel. All I
know is when I woke up the Yankees had made the playoffs and there
were these pedals on the kitchen counter. Like I said, complicated.

Hey there -
Gernot's recent images of his weekly Thailand Riv Ride inspired me to create
a new Riv-derivative flickr grouup -
"Far-Flung Rivendells" - chronicling those Rivendells which have travelled
from their Walnut Creek, CA origins.

Yes, we are in Chiang Mai City. Northern Thailand is indeed a cycling
paradise. There are lots of little roads criss-crossing the landscape
with very little car traffic. Most are paved, but plenty turn to dirt
as they snake over a ridge, to return to tarmac on the far side.
Perfect terrain for pass
By the time Riv specd 753 on their frames, it had been around for quite some
time. 853 was just coming along around not long after. I would imagine that
Reynolds had worked out things by then.

OK, I didn't know where in the time line those things happened, just that I
"heard" it somewhere...

Hi Everyone,
I always think of these things too late, but was curious if anyone in the SoCal
area wanted to meet up in South Orange County for an afternoon ride on
Christmas day. Nothing too long or too fast. I live in the Capistrano Beach
area so starting in that area. Will provide after ride
I am also making one of my goals for 2010 to try to do at least an S240 and
focus on lighter touring as described here. I've also had a rough end of the
year regarding time on the bike, so the fitness has lapsed and the weight
control plans are on shaky ground. I also plan on joining as many local
One of the great things about finding Rivendell has been finding a
source for real wool clothing. I love real wool socks, but 100% wool
doesn't wear as well as blends. Sooner or later, even with blends,
you'll need to learn how to do this!:

Hey Joe,
I can't make it on Christmas Day, but I was thinking about doing a
turkey hangover ride on Saturday morning; same thing, nothing too long
or too fast. I'm in North Orange County, but wouldn't mind traveling
down south... Or if anyone is interested let me know.

Thank you for the link Tim. Quite sobering to read the log of a

I noted on the Velo Orange blog today that Ernest Csuka, the artisan
maker of Alex Singer cycles for more than 60 years, has died on

cycles were also very beautiful. With his death goes the last of the

That's tood bad you two can't make it. I'll be leaving town for a few days
Saturday morning. I should be back about Wed or Thurs and free until the 4th if
you want to ride then. Let me know.
As for anyone else, my plan is to get out around 1PM tomorrow from Capo Beach.
Let me know if you care
Off work?? I'm not sure that I'm familiar with the term. I was also
considering a semi-epic New Years Day ride also though...
