That's interesting, I actually find the Marathon Supreme 35mm's to be
really zippy on my QB, more so than the Jack Browns I had on at first.
That might just be the $138/pair premium biasing my perception

I've complained about problems with Paselas and JB sidewalls a bunch

Right now all my bikes have Marathons of various sizes. The QB has
Marathon Supremes. When the Hilsen is back on the road I'm hoping to
put some Duremes on it. Even

That's a strange neurosis, isn't it? I love stocking up on stuff, I
love getting rid of stuff, but I can't stand getting rid of something
that has any utility left. I'm wearing shoes today that I don't
really like all that much so I can we
One more datapoint: I've ridden over 45,000 miles over the last
seven years on Panaracer tires. Most of those were on Pasela (Non-
Tourguard's) 700x32's, a few thousand on Pasela Tourguard 700x32's, a
few thousand were on Grand Bois Cypres 700x30's, a few thousand were

Steve - Then I can only add that YMMV. For me they are no better at
defeating the urban track than , say, Conti GP3/4000s - in 28s. And
less than Conti Gator Skins - also in 28s. Beyond that, who
knows..maybe random acts of whoknowswhat, and other stuff too. I
didn't say I didn't like them, but
I've used paselas on lousy Pennsylvania roads and never had a sidewall
issue - and they've always been fine for defeating glass and the like
with a Mr. Tuffy strip on the rear. I always ride them at max or near-
max pressure, though - are those who have had sidewall problems been
running them reall

I commuted on Paselas for at least 5 years in downtown Washington DC,

What neck of the woods is that?

I once ran over an empty vodka bottle and tore open the sidewall, and
tube, of a brand new Pasela, non TG, 28. It is the only catastrophic
sidewall failure (30 years) that I can't at least partially attribute
to age. In all seriousness, the Pasela sidewalls seem to be about as
tough as other nice r

Tim,
You may be onto something with the last bit. Have always wondered if
the sidewall issue is more common with the folding bead version.
Pretty sure I had a pair of non folding bead Paselas that didn't have
an issue.

So far I've had no trouble with my Paselas, but I'm running 26 x

Perhaps the 700's are more problematic?
I like the Marathons for heavy-dut stuff -- I'm using some 26 x 1.75's
on my Big Dummy -- but for regular street riding the Paselas seem fine
after three years of almost daily use.

I'm moving to the 32 mm Vittoria Randonneur Hyper. I have a pair in

I had Pasela 32s on my Ram. Started riding them last spring; late
summer, got a cut on the sidewall. Tried to boot it w/ mylar cut from

I've had issues with Pasela tan sidewalls. The last pair of 37s I had
developed really bad cracks. No failure, but it was bad enough that I
replaced the tires.
My LBS had some black sidewall (wire bead) Paselas. Have used them on
my Sam Hillborne when I want a skinny tire. Those have worked ju

In my experience w/ Paselas over the last 15 years or so, they have been the
best tires I can find (light, roll great, cheap), but are prone to sidewall
problems. They are much lighter and livelier than Marathons (total dogs,
YMMV) and when I can get them on sale for $15 each, I don't mind the

I have had the same sidewall experience as you with the Pasela, but
have been very happy with other Panaracer tires, like the Fire XC Pro,
still going strong on my mountain bike after three years. I'm
considering 37mm Schwalbe Marathon Supremes for the Quickbeam, but at
$70 each, it won't be soon.
Are you talking about the 4th model down on Peter White's listing of
Schwalbe tires here?: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/schwalbe.asp
$37/ea seems like a good deal for these. I will never buy a Panaracer
product again for sure...

Gave up on Paselas because of the weak sidewall. Go to Schwalbe
