Amen to that. We can all find what works for us.
BTW, I love the way Steve set the gearing on his two smallest cogs. Brilliant!
Something I will keep in mind going forward.
Cheers!

I do believe the takeaway here is there are many different ways to gear a

It seems that all the 7 speed combinations are still available.
That's not the case with 8, where many of the original combinations are

now. They seem to be widely available worldwide, USA and Europe at least.

I changed a lot of parts over the years. About 10 years ago I decided to

I am learning a lot today. Have been riding for some time, but aside from
vintage 10-speeds, I started riding with 8 speed indexed already. Thank

Amazing. Mine was a 72. By 1973 the LBS had already destroyed the

I had exactly the same crank setup with a 7 speed 13-34 cassette. It was
very nice, but honestly these days crossover arrangements have left HSG

Half step plus gearing is great ! I used to run a 24/44/48 with 13-32 7

I had a Trek 620, which is what the listed crank came from. 50-45-28 was a
great touring combination, actually. I'd set up a touring bike that way
again.

The fun 2017 thing to do is grind all the teeth off the big ring. Now it's a
chain guard and you've got a supercompact double.

half-step plus granny, not all that weird in and of itself. Not sure
exactly how many teeth different, but if you want to half-step a pretty
tight gear set to get super fine gears, that's how you would do it.

It is called a half step plus granny. Back when you only had 5 or 6 cogs on
the rear, you wanted all of them to count, so you set up the two big
front chainrings to be able to split the difference between any of the rear
cogs. For example, if the rears were 12% apart, the fronts were 6% apart.
*Should have said, look closely AT THE SECOND PICTURE. Hint: It's a
TRIPLE!*
