With 8 speed HG cogs & imprecise shifting, I've found it's usually just a couple of cogs that are the problem. I sub a 7 speed spacer between the offending cogs & it usually solves the problem. The 7 speeds are just a bit thicker than the 8s. Don't know how many you can change before the stack
