I used Riv Silvers as bar enders for a while but became tired of them jamming me in the upper thigh and seeing them hit my top tube too. I switched them to the down tube and that is where they shine in my opinion. Being on the down tube discourages excessive and obsessive shiftiness plus they are simpler that way and the bike looks cleaner. The only bar end shifters that I like are the old short and stubby Suntour ones that I have on my mustache bar bike. Riv used to sell these when they were available. I think Paul thumbies might work better than bar end shifters for the above stated reasons if you don't like stretching forward to shift. I do have Silvers on our 'family conversion mountain bike' with Albatross bars and they work great on that bar/bike combo. Never used Shimano bar enders.
