So something is creating the files as qscand user but in roots group. Do
you have any idea what this could be? Surely the only thing writing
files there should be qmail-scanner?

error in that script. I have attempted to use it and just get this in my
logs:
deferral: maildrop:_Missing_',_",_or_`./mailfilter(3):_Syntax_error./
I am pretty sure maildrop is installed:
# maildrop -v
