Hi,
It could be the RPM freezing bug, and your rpm database can be
corrupted.
1 - Verify that you have no rpm process or up2date process running (ps
-ef | grep rpm ; ps -ef | grep up2date )
2 - root : If any, kill them (kill -9 ...)
3 - cd /var/lib/rpm ; rm __db.*
4 - rpm -rebuilddb
5 - wai
Just interested in your problem with up2date.
Problem repaired by removing the up2date rpm and reinstalling it.
How did you do that?
As an experiment I tried Synaptic to do both remove and reinstall. It
worked nicely with little effort on my part.

I still don't know why up2date was corrupted but it works again.

I had the same thing happen to me... one of my firewall rules was blocking up2date and
some other websites.

Oh. You need to visit https://rhn.redhat.com then. Log in and delete the
old system profile. That will free up your entitlement, which you then
must assign to the current system profile before you can use up2date.

The error message is in error (go figure). rhn_register is no more. Use
'up2date --register' instead.

But my system is already registered. If I do this a second time, which
I did as root from a shell, the same system gets registered again
Do what the error message says, run rhn_register. open up a shell,
su - to root and then run rhn_register.

Make sure you have the 'Notification Area' applet enabled and then run
rhn-applet-gui from Menu->Run.

I could not repeat the process of my previous email but adding the
suggested line to my .bashrc worked very well so far. Any problem with

I had the same issue in KDE. Found that removing check in "show windows
from all desktops" in the -control center - look & feel - taskbar screen
generated the same result. I think a bug may have been reported.
Rechecking the box and logging in again may correct the problem. I
prefer to leave it

I have just removed mine to experiment (to help reply).
Have you still got the "Panel Notification Area"? It's hard to tell.

Yeah, I got the same exact behavior a few days ago when I grabbed the
fetchmail update. I'm still a novice so I just logged off and back on
and it worked the second time. (wasn't sure how to kill the process -
kill pid didn't seem to stop it).
