I've always had consistent success with a crossover cable and ssh. Serial connections with Wrap and Alix can be hit and miss and it's hard to see why it worked yesterday but not today. You may consider spending the pesos on the cable instead of coffee, cigarettes or aspirin. Are you in BA? What
