Running linuxMint mate 19.0.3 on macbook pro 15, mid2009 single boot.
I tried others and got a lot to talk, but the boot manager on macs is a beast.
So far linuxMint is the only fighter, and it found all of my hardware.

The problem is accessibility of the desktop environment and witch type of
accessibility you need to use.
The top desktops I found to work with speech the best are gnome

When it comes to smart devices. You have to make sure you get the
devices that are compatible or they will not work.
All remote devices have a list of what products they work with. So if
yours is not listed it will never work.

If its not showing in applications or task tray its not installed. Go back to
dropbox and download it again for install.

If you do cmd+option+r.
You get the last release your mac had installed.
If you do cmd+option+shift+r.
You will get the latestest release offered to current date.
Both of these work best with wired connection.

Your not going crazyit does it on my 8. All you have to do is plug in the
headphones and it will play no matter locked or on.

For your info, this happends to be a bug.
To get out just turn off voiceover and swipe left or right for another
page. Then turn voiceover back on.
I did a screen share and file send for that bug and still no fix for it
and a few more bugs, and that was when 18 first came out..
