Oh yes! Will have to try and give him a listen for comparison.

it's good enough for runtime work such as you need the recovery partition for.

Gee, after reading all this thread and the article, I have to kind of wonder
what's the big deal is: especially when you can just run a clean install off
the run time partition. I mean really. Same difference ain't it?

is recovery mode accessible with voiceover? I remember having to use it for
something awhile ago. I couldn't use it though because voiceover never came on.
safe mode is not accessible with voiceover. I had to use it recently. I can't
remember why. I do recommend writing to apple accessibility to
Yes, I realize now that I was mistaken, as I remember running from recovery
mode and choosing to do a clean install from the thumb drive.

This is not always correct. I did a clean install with a bootable disk start up

OSX did see the bootable disk anyway and it worked.

Once you install using the thumb drive, you'd have to reset your startup disc
to the hard drive at some point, yes?
In any case there are several ways to do it. the article points out one way.
You can also set your startup disc to the thumb drive, being careful to set it
back to the hard drive
Still no excuse. You can choose the thumb drive from Startup Disk in System
Preferences. You should see something like, "Os X 10.9.2 installer" in the
startup disk group of radio buttons. If you don't then either it's the
incorrect thumb drive, no thumb drive inserted or other problems.

The install is accessible, but choosing the thumb drive isn't, unless you guess
and count. I had to get about one minute of sighted help to choose the thumb
drive, but the installation works fine once you load VO.

What? Why can't you do it all from within the USB installer? If you're
going to use the recovery partition you might as well install from that
partition. Just my thoughts.

The only thing to keep in mind with this method is that the boot screen is not
accessible with Voiceover as far as I'm aware. using a recovery drive is,
though.
