Once you install using the thumb drive, you'd have to reset your startup disc 
to the hard drive at some point, yes?

In any case there are several ways to do it. the article points out one way. 
You can also set your startup disc to the thumb drive, being careful to set it 
back to the hard drive once you've installed. You can also use discMaker X to 
create you thumb drive installation and set your startup disc as needed. My 
original point is that the way the article outlines it, specifically indicating 
that you should use the option key method and the boot screen, this boot screen 
is not Vo-accessible, so you might want to try a more accessible method.

Recovery is only used if you are not doing a clean install.
