No problems asking. I don't recall whether pre-installed Lion on
machines came with DVD installers or not. Did your machine come with
some disks? If not, I think there are recipes for downloading the
installer using the recovery process.

Thanks, Chris:
I can grab that other external pretty easily. Would there be a way to come
by a Lion installer? My Macbook came with Lion pre-installed so I wouldn't
know where to get a hold of the installer. Is that a kosher question?

Dunno if it's worth the effort. You can get an external firewire 500GB

If I install Mountain Lion without backing up my system, will I lose all my
data? I have VMWare fusion with Windows 7 and Kurzweil 1000 installed, and my
external hard drive, which would hold all of this, still does not work at the
moment.
Any thoughts of what I should do?

If I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, without doing a reformat of my
whole hard drive, will it wipe all my data, and I have to migrate it all back
from a backup, or will all my stuff still be there? I'm still mired in
old-school thinking I'm afraid.

When you start the installation, VO will already be running, or at least it
should be. You only have to enable it when you re-start. As to when to invoke
VO, I waited about a minute or so, and tried it. If it doesn't work, just keep
trying with Command F5 and it will give the familiar message
iCloud is great as should you need to restore your iOS device and no doubt
your mac you can restore from a previous iCloud backup.

Out of curiosity, has anyone done this with bootcamp? I have refit
installed, so I press m for mac or w for windows when I push the power
button. Should I press m after each reboot, or just leave it alone?
I've managed to update to 10.7.2, .3, and .4 okay, but I've never done

When your system reboots for the first time you can turn on VoiceOver at this
point to get your percentage of your install progress and the approximate time
left. When my system rebooted for the second time VoiceOver came up speaking.

Apparently vm is fine.
I don't have iCloud set up, it scares me marginally more than iTunes with
regard to loss and salvation of my data.
Posts on list suggest its use is paramount. Should I set up iCloud before
install? Is its use necessary? If I set it up, any tips for not losing
everything
Ok, Les, how do you know when it's ok to turn VoiceOver on when you're
installing Mountain lion? I got my computer three days before Lion, and I did
my install of Lion at the Apple store. I mean, until you get VoiceOver going,
your computer has gone bye-bye for a while.

I haven't yet sorted fusion. Was going to sort ml and then vm. But should I
wait?

Your question is a good one. Let me assure you that you can do this. First,
you should do a complete backup of all of your data. Also, make certain your
programs are all up-to-date. You can check in the App Store by searching for
the word Updates to see if there are any updates available. I
