Your question is a good one.  Let me assure you that you can do this.  First, 
you should do a complete backup of all of your data.  Also, make certain your 
programs are all up-to-date.  You can check in the App Store by searching for 
the word Updates to see if there are any updates available.  It's also a good 
idea to run Software Update to make certain you have the most current updates 
for Lion.  Now, once you've done this, just purchase Mountain Lion.  It will 
download and your system will re-boot.  You may have to turn on VO when your 
system restarts, but you will then have speech through the remainder of the 
installation process.  It took me about an hour to do the install, just 
finished, and all went well.
