When this has happened to me, I always unplug the drive from everything, wait a
few seconds, then plug everything back in again. That’s what works here…

That didn’t work at all. What worked though was erasing the whole disk not the
volume. Now everything is as it should.

You might want to blank the drive first--no telling what little trivia
might be lurking there. In any case that's what I'd do.
Drop into the Terminal and do:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/[drive]
where [drive] is the correct designation as shown under /dev. Be careful
you use the correct one!

I actually have a seagate, it worked great. When you get it, depending on what
you will use it for, you may need to repartition it to use with the mac, or you
could format it as a fat32 drive, then it will work in mac and windows.

Thanks Phil. I have a very old Lacie which is completely full and I haven't
used in years, but never had a problem with it so maybe even though a little

i've been using an HD with 2 drives set up to duplicate each other. if
one fails you are supposed to remove the bad one and the other will be
duplicated on the new one. this procedure failed when my WD drive
failed and WD no longer had one of that size! i wound up paying a

if memory serves me right it was around $149.00 It supports USB 3.0, but not
thunderbolt still plenty fast and not a major costly drive. It comes with
software for both windows and Mac though I have never used the software I

I've also had this experience with a particular external hard drive. I think
it's hard to use the same external hard drives for windows and Mac, due to the
different formatting requirements between Windows and the Mac. So since I'm
not willing to reformat the hard drive in question,
