Hello, thanks for the answer, as I said to another list member I thought that was the issue, but wanted to be sure. I am thinking of a thunder bolt drive for the machine. If you know of any I should consider let me know. Again thanks for the help.

I think it's hard to use the same external hard drives for windows and Mac, due to the different formatting requirements between Windows and the Mac.
