Hi,
I've been having these problems too. But to me there seems to be too separate,
though perhaps connected, problems.
First is a problem I only have at the login screen. This problem occurs even
though I'm not using a bluetooth headset. On awaking from sleep or prolongged
inactivity VoiceOver

I lucked in by checking this thread as I too have been experiencing this
problem. Will definitely give Ricardo's suggestion a try next time it happens.

I was having a similar problem with my Mac Mini but found I had a bad memory
stick. My husband was watching and it appears that voiceover was trying to load
but took it a minute or two. It's so hard when you don't know whether voiceover
is on or not.

I have this issue as well and it seems to be worsening, Phil. Sometimes
Braille works but not speech.

Well, I didn't have it at all on Lion but Mountain Lion. It seems to be
worsening lately.

Hi again guys
I have never lost VO after sleep on my 13-inch Mac Book Pro that I got in 2011,
just in case that info is important. I used to have problems losing speech
before we got Mountain Lion, and the braille display would keep going, and it
sounds a lot like what you guys are talking abou
that's how it is here on my 2011 iMac.

Hi,
I agree with others that pressing command f5 four times will start VO again.
I have eliminated this problem on my 2013 MacBook Pro by turning the power nap
feature off. Earlier machines don't have this feature anyway.

After verifying I have sound with the volume keys, I can press Command+f5 four
times to revive VO.

Hi,
Yes. I get this from time to time. When it happens, press command F5 4 times.
This will bring speech back up.

So, what is your audio setup like?
On Feb 20, 2013, at 10:24 AM,
upon waking from sleep mode, often VO will not speak. I have to mess around
with the volume keys to get some system sounds going, then turn VO off and back
on a few times before it will finally come up talking. It takes about two or
three minutes to do all this and get VO talking again.
