I don't know if this related to your problem or not, but I had something happen with my USB drive this past week.
I have set my Mac Book Pro to go to sleep when I shut the lid. I have never had a problem with this, but last week, when I shut the lid and case back, I got an error message that my computer had been restarted and did I want to report it to chpple. I did, and I thought this had something to do with my Bluetooth braille display. Then I discovered tTime Machine wouldn't access my USB drive. I ended up having to call that wonderful 877 number to fix the problem, something that would have been difficult if I had been a Windows computer because who knows who would have admitted that it was their responsibility or job to deal with it.
