What type of Mac do you use?
I think I have seen that some Macs has issues with usb hubs and such things.

Finder will do the trick.

Finder has no window is not uncommon, though in this case may be
related. But I would suggest a couple thing. Don't use a bub. and test
each drive alone in Dish Utility and run First Aid on.

I am bored with it myself.
A few months ago, my drive that I used for Time Machine just up and died. So I
started with a new one. I sometimes connected this new drive with just a cable
and sometimes through a hub.
