I’ve never had issues using the optical side. I have terminated an Apple TV previous generation with the optical out straight to a Denon AVR 5803 very successfully but that’s a $5K receiver when it was new a few years ago so it better work.:) I’ll have him give me the part number the next time

Scott, I'd be interested in your results as well. I've connected Airport Expresses via ethernet to other networks and the Airplay feature remains as easy as ever. I don't have any non-Apple Home routers though to test with to see if WDS or whatever the newest connection method is, will work.
