I have been inserting figures in Lyx (1.4.2 Windows XP) dozens of times and
never had any problems with their previews. Until this time... I created a
PostScript figure in Matlab ( the same procedure as I always use) and this

Yes, moving the file test.lyx to C:\ solves the problem. The path to
test.lyx is fairly long. It's located five directories deep.
The path consists of 68 characters, including C: and "\", plus the file
name. I have changed figure name to be only one character long, but that
did not help.

one more idea: if this is really a PATH problem and things worked
normally under lyx 1.4.1, then I would do the following simple steps
(unless you already tried this and I didn't see it in the earlier
messages):

Revert to LyX 1.4.1 and open the Preferences dialog to find out EXACTLY
When I start lyx1.4.2 I see two black windows (shell windows???) pop-up and
dissapear before Lyx actually appears. Lyx1.4.1 only flashes one black
window.

The paths are not supposed to be the same. LyX 1.4.1 did not
install a python directory under LyX. Also the batfiles are
not the same. This usually happens when the preferences
files under c:\documents and settings\yourusername~~~\~
are not deleted during the uninstall. Then the next
version picks

Lyx (or GS) gets "stuck" at different figures depending on what I comment
out in lyx.bat.

Matlab comes with its own version of Gs.
I actually have three versions of gs.exe. Cygwin has two. One in cygwin\bin
directory and one in cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin directory.

hiding all the Cygwin and Matlab copies of the GS executable (say by
adding a $ to the start of their names, which is easy to undo

What worked even better than "cuted" is \begin{figure*} because "cuted"
follows strange rules when it places the text around two-column equations
and "midfloat" which should do better did not work. I suspect it did not

I decided to upgrade from LyX1.4.2 to LyX1.4.3-4. The new version does not
display equations correctly on my system. I tried to download
BaKoMa4LyX-1.1.zip math fonts and to reinstall them in to WinXP but was not
successful at fixing the math fonts in 1.4.3-4.
LyX1.4.2 and earlier did not

it just before reinstalling lyx1.4.3-4 did the trick.

A portion of my document preamble is shown below. I add that to preamble to
create a letters inside a circle with an ERT command
such as \tcircledIII{$A$} that results in letter A inside a circle. This
works fine everywhere in the document with the exception of the figure
captions.
This should always work:
\usepackage{textcomp}
For small letters use in LyX e.g. the command
\textcircled{w}
in ERT.
This one works in the figure caption
For larger letters use e.g.
\Large \textcircled{\normalsize\raisebox{-1.5pt}{W}}
in ERT.
But this one does not. I get a message:

I had a problem using hyperref. When I included this package, long section
names and long captions were no longer wrapping around in TOC and LOF and
ran of the page. Also pdflatex would not work for me.
With Uwe suggestion, I upgraded to MiKTeX 2.6 all of these problems got
resolved,
When pdflatex converts *.eps files to pdf I get errors that these figures
can't be converted and are not shown in the final pdf. When .ps files get
converted, their boundingboxes are ignored so figures are not displayed
properly.
I think, although I am not sure, that pdflatex can't read (e)ps f

Missing bounding boxes can be restored by program called "ps2eps",

After correcting your eps, you can try to push them through epstopdf

When I generate Latex part (.pstex_t) of a xfig picture, xfig inserts:
\color[rgb]{0,0,0} in front of every line of text in the pstex_t document.
Lyx seem to have a problem with \color[rgb]{0,0,0}. As soon as edit
.pstex_t file and remove \color[rgb]{0,0,0} Lyx becomes happy again.

Yes. LyX automatically closes empty paragraphs if not told otherwise by
the
KeepEmpty keyword in the layout file.
A fast workaround is to fool LyX by putting something invisible into the
APPENDICES paragraph, e.g. "{}"

.ps output file. The zero sits much higher in the postscript output than in
