On debian, you can use higher level programs like dselect or aptitude to set
'hold' on packages so that they are not upgraded (or downgraded). you just
use the '=' key on the right package.
Also if you don't have these programs, you can set a 'pi
master volume doesn't change anything and only
PCM and PCM2 channels change it.

I managed once to record a file directly to mp3:
I told mplayer to dump the file as wave instead of an asf, but instead
of writing to a file, I set up a fifo node.
then I ran lame to that fifo to compress it live to an mp3.

It would be wonderful if they add something like that to DocBook standard.
For now you can use a .css file with "direction: rtl" set in it for
your documents.

I've used a bluetooth dongle from conceptronics (called CBT100U). It
works fine on linux, and I was able to transfer files to my phone, and
to my friend's thinkpad. There are problems with synchronization with my
phone, but that's the phone's old software's fault (it's a nokia 7650).

I use squid on my laptop. The current memory usage is 11MB with 6MB
resident, and it has 2 processes running. I don't feel it is too heavy
for my system, but of course it depends on the hardware.
