So, I suggest a tracker for the documentation enhancement, and another
to capture the idea of replacing the existing C++ rational
implementation with an arbitrary precision implementation. That second
tracker may trigger a debate about performance but I'd prefer that
took place on the tracker rather than here on the bug list.

In my early days with Lilypond I learned this to my cost. I've never
used \relative since then
racker and get it onto the work list. Send it to bug-lilypond
or just reply to this and one of us will forward it to bug-lilypond for
you.

Is anyone on the list aware of a tool that takes a valid Lilypond
score as input and produces as output the same .ly file but with the
formatting and layout standardized?
If you know asyle, then I am looking for astyle for Lilypond.
