I've thought about it and I agree, it should work as you expect. The docs are here: http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.17/Documentation/notation/writing-rhythms#ties I'm going to forward this bug-lilypond, Jim, as this seems to be a Documentation problem even if it is not a bug.
