If you adjust your mixture by leaning to a numerical EGT reading, you
are just asking for an engine failure.

Hey Guys, Need some ideas on how to fix a problem. I am flying a VW 2180
with an 1821 carb and a KR intake sytem from Great Plains Aircraft. My
compression ratio is 6.9 to 1 with standard cylinder heads. My problem is
that at cruise my EGTs run 1500 to 1800 degrees on all cylinders while the

Stanley,
I was told that the probe should be 4" from the exhaust port, so you may be
running VERY hot, but your CHT does not reflect that. 6.9 to 1 is fairly low
compression, so that seems very odd to me. Get one of those fuel/air ratio
gauges and check the actual mixture. What is an 1821 carb?

Usually when you have a problem with a product, you should contact the vendor.
What does Steve Bennett have to say?
I have a VW 2180 from Great Planes also and am getting close to making real
airplane noise.

As was asked, I do have and inflight adjustable mixture conrtrol and an
Air-Fuel Ratio meter. Everything seemed fine except for the EGT. Also the
reason for the 6.9 to 1 compression ratio is to allow for the 91 Octane auto
fuel here in Calif. The plugs look OK. I was richening the mixture until

I'd suspect a gauge problem. I can't imagine an EGT of 1800 degrees, unless
you're burning something other than gasoline!

Stanley,
If you are truly running 1800 EGT, I think that you are burning your engine
up. The reason for asking about the meter and mixture control was to
determine if you have a way to adjust the mixture from the cockpit and if
you have another way of verifying those extraordinary temperatures. I
Take this for what you paid for it. This is from my hot Roding of diesel
motors, make sure your EGT probe if installed in the exhaust manifold or
exhaust pipe is not bottomed out and touching the hot metal of the manifold
or pipe. This would skew the reading on your gauge. You would also be read

training was for a specific set of engine paramitors (MAP, RPM, Altitude).
