I was told that the probe should be 4" from the exhaust port, so you may be
running VERY hot, but your CHT does not reflect that. 6.9 to 1 is fairly low
compression, so that seems very odd to me. Get one of those fuel/air ratio
gauges and check the actual mixture. What is an 1821 carb?

Yes, the shorter the intake, the better, and I do believe that a single pipe
would give you better flow. In fact, I have heard that a single port head is
better than the dual port. So, I don't really know why we always end up with
the dual port unless they just don't make the single port any more. Put the
carb on top, like it is in the car and it will run better. Good luck doing
that.
