My KR came from the factory (Ken Cottle and Steve Bennett) with a
side-mounted ICOM IC-A5 handheld. The external antenna connects to a
linear amplifier installed below the hat shelf and draws power from a
cigarette lighter adapter. With its tiny size, built-in battery back-up,

Right both ways! Canada can require a radio license, and they are available
from the FCC. I carry one for my boat, but have never been asked for one at the
border. Colin will know about other countries. Peter

OOPS, think I misunderstood your situation - thought you were talking of
using just the handheld com/VOR.
Still, those radios have been approved by the FCC for use in aircraft,
so the only possible snag in my view is not having it installed by a pro

I think similar items are considered more a backup for emergency use
rather than the only equipment, but hey, the FCC approves them in the
transceiver sense, and even the big boys often carry one as a last ditch
comm means. Not sure about the VOR aspect though, but likely that also

Thanks for the info. I have a Yaesu with vor. I'm looking at a panel mount like

I've had my eye out for one of those for a long time without finding
anything. I've found it difficult to easily talk to myself over the din
of cockpit noise in flight.

I'm not seeing it listed but I purchased an adaptor that replaced the
battery and allowed me to plug (cigarette lighter) into aircraft
power. That shortens the radio my 3/4 the size of the

Any radio that meets the frequency separation requirements can be
used. Some spend $800 to $1000 for a panel mount. I've been using a
JHP-520 nav/com handheld for years now a
I don't know what an 8130 is, but I do believe that any equipment required
for IFR must be panel mounted. That does not mean that you can get an "Air
Gismo" and stick it in the panel. It has to be made to be installed in the
panel. This is just for IFR, like flying on an IFR flight plan.

Hi Dan.
I didn't research the matter but I think there is something about
"non-permanently installed equipment"; that's how the first EFBs entered the
market. My Icom A5 failed (ok, I fried it) and I'm now using an A6 with
success.
Heading out of here for a few landings @ MMV...

Not planning to fly IFR but will be through controlled airspace. My transponder
has been serviced with a fresh 8130-3. So now the question. Are com radios
required to have a 8130 for experimental aircraft as long as they are not on
the FAAs banned list?

Hi Netters,
well after kicking around the problems of using aluminum pigmented paint. I
have a new question.
Having decided to use the silver paint scheme now I have to address the best
location and installations of the antennas for the nav /com handheld and elt.
As for the ELT , I decided to ins
