OOPS, think I misunderstood your situation - thought you were talking of 
using just the handheld com/VOR.

Still, those radios have been approved by the FCC for use in aircraft, 
so the only possible snag in my view is not having it installed by a pro 
and signed off - and I bet that is not enforced for experimentals that 
often.   Maybe someone else has had personal experience with a similar 
radio installation and will respond. Personally, I would put what I 
preferred in the panel and never have a second thought, provided the 
radio was one currently being sold new. or a tested and certified used 
unit from a licensed shop. Remember to add it to your W&B calcs and 
record, and keep your restricted radiotelephone operator license 
available just in case some overzealous Fed demands it . . .
