Steve had me send my 69mm 1045 German forged steel crank to Ken Shawoosch (
Spelling of his last name may not be correct, but the pronunciation is correct
) , early in the 1990’s to have my crank deep drilled and tapered. He said that
they will break within 10 hours of any prop strike. Mine was
How do you protect the corners of the firewall on the original KR1 design? It
looks in pictures like the rear exhaust is just outside of the upper corners.
Scorching and softening of glue joints are coming to mind! Keep Smiling…Rev. Jim

I have received an email from a number of builders who are interested in
following my “new” Old School KR -1 build. I have created an EAA builders log
page with my hours/cost/ pictures so I don’t trash up the KRnet for those who
are not interested. I have to catch the log page up to where I am
The purpose of my response is to instill confidence in the KR empennage! It is
very strong. When a 190Lb. Man falls on it and that is all that breaks. It is a
fine design. I was just pointing out where my plywood tore from being over
stressed. Everything has a point of failure, and that is wher
I have some information that may be of interest to those who wonder how the
horizontal tail might fail.
When I was moving around in my barn. I tripped and fell backwards onto the
starboard side of my horizontal stabilizer!
When I inspected the tail, the front and aft webs of the forward hori

Evolution of the KR’s….I started building my KR2 in 1990. And after flying
Martys plane in Oklahoma. I also got on the speed wagon after flying his plane
with the 2180cc engine in it. We had just landed and discovered a crack in the
case going towards an oil gallery below the oil pressure switch
Mark when I built my KR2. I melted down 2-2.5 pounds of tire weights in a
camping stove pot that I could throw away. I then poured the lead in a
“cardboard “ box about 2”x2”x4” that I lined on the inside and outside with
Ductape. When it finished smoking I then picked all the residual paper off
KR1 drawing 4A……sternpost is 40” tall.
My early blueprints have it as 38”.
It appears that 2” was added to the stern post in the fuselage depth of the
last bay! The old prints show the depth of this bay at 9”…….has this been
changed in the newer plans to 11” as in the KR2?

I was able to acquire the retract landing gear. I’m still in need of retract
gear axles/spacers/bolts/ mechanical brakes, if anyone is no longer using
theirs and are willing to part with them.
Thanks: Rev. Jim Gogniat
