Evolution of the KR’s….I started building my KR2 in 1990. And after flying
Martys plane in Oklahoma. I also got on the speed wagon after flying his plane
with the 2180cc engine in it. We had just landed and discovered a crack in the
case going towards an oil gallery below the oil pressure switch area. This was
right after he was racing in the Sun 100 air race I believe it was called. I
now have over 23,000 hrs of flight time and I can tell you that his airplane
was fantastic to fly.
What I am doing now may prove to be just as exciting. I am building a KR
1 , in its original form with a 1700cc VW and any safety upgrades, (ie)…
balanced ailerons, etc. This plane is to bring back the original spirit of home
building an aircraft. It will be as light as possible, and will be made without
the big box aircraft suppliers whenever possible ! But… I “Refuse” to build a
“garbage”airplane. It is not healthy to sit around and do nothing. So I am
hoping to encourage others to keep life simple and enjoy it.
If you all are interested in following my journey. I am willing to share it
with you.
I have been making the aluminum bellcrank parts for the plane out of my
stock 7075T6 extruded aluminum of the same thickness as called out in the
plans.
I bought LP/PP white pine wood from Lowe’s that is drying for use in the
airplane. This white wood is used by other kit companies for building their
planes. The secret is to find out when Lowe’s receives their new shipment of
wood. Then you respectfully dig through a hundred boards in each stack of wood
to locate the proper grain of wood to be used in your plane. Remember,
scrounging is part of the experience! I have been buying damaged 8x12 foot
boards for 90 percent off. That’s $2.70!!! All I needed was the two edges of
the board which were perfect! The rest I made into guide blocks , while other
wood will be made into the jig frames. Note: I have found HomeDepot white wood
to be too dry! It snaps very easy. I stay away from their wood!
Enough for now until I find out if you all might be interested in following
along. The last thing I want to do is interfere with your KRnet. I can be reach
off line at textailwinds “at” gmail. com ….I will enjoy your posts either way!
Keep Smiling…Rev. Jim
