So,
All planes I have own and flown has this happen, the hatch, door, latch
finds a way to open on it's own. 2 certified, 1 experimental.
I have often carried a bungee to hold it from unlatching.
I own a kr I have never flown. I will be needing a really safe can't
wiggle loose solution..

While I mostly agree with Mark and
Yes, look at your canopy. The top is the shape of your wing top
airfoil surface, and it produces lift. Vibration is what caused mine
to open, but I now have an entirely different latch mechanism. The
aircraft structure did not fail, nor did my latch, it just vibrated to
the unlock position.
I am the John Shaffer you refer to. My homemade latching mechanism
vibrated to an unlocked position in a very mild turbulence. Nothing
even on the G meter. I had just read about a Navion canopy blowing off
in flight , and the 3 souls spun to their death. If you ever have one
come open in
My KR2 that had the canopy "issue" has a front hinged "pop up" canopy. The
latch was (changed now) a central knob between the seats that pushed 2
rods, one on each side, through holes in tabs that are attached to the
canopy. One of the things I disliked about it is that it was never easy to
confirm
The key here is to have a simple secondary latch or catch should the primary latch either fail, or in my case, I forget to latch it. My RV has a simple handle at the back of the canopy frame that I rotate 90 degrees when I close the canopy. When rotated 90 degrees, the handle overlaps the bottom
While I mostly agree with Mark and also feel the canopy should be hinged at the
front: if you have one already hinged at the side there may be hope and a safer
method. I just build a Drongonfly canopy latch that is virtually identical to
the Long EZ latch for N47MG. I have a lot of time in Long
thanks Mark,
So as I am reading it the rear of the canopy is the area being lifted in
flight so in my 3d imagination I am visualizing a strap affair above and
outside the bulk of the canopy structure, built into and not protruding,
terminating at the bottom on both sides with "live or die" qualit

So does anyone know are the failures with canopy latches becoming unlatched
or are these something like frame failure, or delamination at the
plexiglass events?
Some mix of the above?
Should my canopy construction include a carbon fiber or kevlar single
direction strip on the outside of the canop
Thank mark. When I got CofA for my KR2, the Authorities asked me to add two more canopy locksIt then had 4 over centre latches, two per side, two rear of the longeron and two mid longeron My new KR2SS has the sameVery sadPhilSent from my iPhoneOn 25 Jan 2023, at 01:39, Mark Langford wrote:

A forward-hinged canopy has always seemed to me a safer way
John Schaeffer had a canopy open in flight years ago. Flat spun to the ground
with serious injuries but luckily survived. Flew his newer KR to Lake Barkley
gathering on a borrowed undersized prop. The man is a legend.

Isn't "failed in flight" and "failed in the air" the same thing?

Interesting!
Having had a "Canopy failure" in flight on a KR2 I can attest that it was
NOT fun
So I can easily believe that it could be the cause of the crash.

The recently released Pete Klapp accident investigationupdate includes
photos, toxicology, witness interview, logs. Most telling was the
witness interview (pilot overheard Pete's radio call about "canopy
failure"), but the NTSB has no conclusion. Looking at the photos of the
canopy connection
