I am the John Shaffer you refer to. My homemade latching mechanism vibrated to an unlocked position in a very mild turbulence. Nothing even on the G meter. I had just read about a Navion canopy blowing off in flight , and the 3 souls spun to their death. If you ever have one come open in flight, it is very scary. You may even panic, and not do what might save you and the plane. Your results may vary, Right, Larry Flesner?
The recently released Pete Klapp accident investigation update See [1]https://data.ntsb.gov/Docket?ProjectID=103795 [2] Regarding the name John Schaeffer . . . is he the one who was test flying a sleek Czech import (Sport Cruiser?) a few years ago and incurred very serious injuries (perhaps death?) The name rings a bell since I knew an old fellow near Albuquerque that was building that same aircraft before old age caught up with him.
