Mark, If you look closely, that cutout is below the canopy but in the canopy frame. It's covered with a piece of plex that is mounted with a piece of piano hinge. Apparently, he could unlatch it and just push it out with his elbow. Here is a better view:http://www.qam.com.au/aircraft/kr-2/VH-XX
