I would say that I did like the old icons more. While the old ones were bright
and clear the new icons look more than a bit washed-out. In addition the icon
for deselecting features can be missleading, the "X" there looks more like
"Delete".

icons that look like derived from FamFamFam... maybe we have a look at
those :)

gif images by png's maybe that is the problem?
