I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. In my case, I pretty much never
used opengl, so it was not a problem for me to remove it from my USE
flags. Yet *that* was the change that gave me perfect stab

I had this problem as well. If you are using composite, try turning
that off, as that is what did it for me.
Actually, I think I could have done some combination of leaving
composite on and fiddling with AllowCompositeWithGLX.
