It is not a GUI environment problem. People had the problem on fluxbox, kde, Gnome and the works. It is also not Distro related because multiple distro's have this same problem. It is possible that it is hardware related or x related. Also, the freezes happen even when not using OpenGL, so it can't be 3d related. I was reading the Nvidia readme. It turns out that the 4x rate is disabled for all via chipsets by default because it caused some via chipsets to act up. So whenever you use Nvidia's internal AGPGART, the rate is 2x. Aside from that, I continued reading and it said that you should not use the internal AGPGART unless your chipset is in the list of supported chipsets in the Nvidia readme. My theory is that by forcing that 2x rate, some problems may be the side effect. Also, I was using Nvidia's AGPGART. I have set the option in my modules.d/nvidia file that allows Via chipsets to use 4x. I have also switched from Nvidia's internal AGPGART to Linux's AGPGART. So far I have been up for over 24 hours with no freeze, I'm going to wait about a week and if all goes smoothely I will post it as a possible cure in the Gentoo Desktop forum. -- -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
