Have you tried grub for DOS? Search as GRUB4DOS.
I remember long time ago kolobrios used to have installers for several
versions of Windows including win9x.

By sure softmodem will give you a lot of problems.
At bestdata.com there are some external serial modems.
Look for their DOS compatible model, I have used it succesfully for

has a very hard learning curve, but once you learn the keystrokes is
really eficient, I worked a lot with it and tested WP6.0 but was very
slow on amy 486SLC with 2 Mb Ram...
