permissions of configure script itself had to be altered.
A simple grep for CHMOD and WRKSRC reveals a heap of ports doing such
things in ${WRKSRC}...

GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge.
Although I must add that the problem mainly disappeared when I switched
to openoffice.org-3-devel (currently running 3.1.20081024).
