Yes I can write a new file to the desktop iPod folder, and see it when the iPod
is disconnected (I've confirmed this on two different generations of iPod)
So the issue (from my point of view) seems to be specifically writing to
playlists, but the fact I can write downloaded files such as podcasts
I have found a workaround to this.
I have found that the issue occurs when I try to copy a file from RhythmBox to
an existing playlist (see screenshot attached).
I can write files to the ipod if I copy to the ipod "root" itself as displayed
in RhythmBox, and NOT to the playlist. From RB, I can
GParted tells me that the filesystem of the iPod is 'FAT32'. However
right-clicking on the desktop icon for the ipod, and selecting 'properties'
says that the file system is 'msdos'.
Also, under the 'permissions' tab, the dialog says "the permissions of could not be determined"
