I have found a workaround to this. I have found that the issue occurs when I try to copy a file from RhythmBox to an existing playlist (see screenshot attached). I can write files to the ipod if I copy to the ipod "root" itself as displayed in RhythmBox, and NOT to the playlist. From RB, I can then organise the files into the playlist, by clicking and dragging (although Podcasts automatically got copied to the Podcast folder on the Ipod). This persists once the ipod is detached.
